Larisa Shepitko studied film at the Moscow Film Academy and the State Institute for Cinematography under famed director Alexander Dovzhenko. Her final school film Heat (1963) was nearly her last, as she grew so ill due to bad weather that she had to be removed on a stretcher. by Ariel Courage. If you’ve spent any time haunting the website of the cinephile DVD company Criterion Collection, you may have stumbled across the name Larisa Shepitko. Two of her films, Wings (1966) and The Ascent (1973), have recently enjoyed something of a small-scale revival, Larisa Shepitko was an accomplished Russian filmmaker but unfortunately not really able to get to the public at large as she died at the very young age of 40. This set gives us two very good films indeed: 'Wings' is one of her earliest while 'The Ascent' was to be her last. Wings (Krylya, 1966), included in this set, was the first of Shepitko's films to explicitly consider the Great Patriotic War, albeit indirectly. Set in contemporary Soviet Ukraine, Wings follows four days in the life of Nadezhda Petrukhina (Maya Bulgakova), a highly-decorated heroine of the Great Patriotic War. 2021-04-06 1966-11-10 Though her name is now unjustly obscure, Larisa Shepitko was one of the boldest, most renowned filmmakers of the Soviet era.
